Spay and Neutering for Pets
Spaying and neutering are surgical procedures that may benefit your pet. When your pet undergoes any of these surgeries they cannot reproduce. This limits stray and overpopulation in shelters. When your pet is spayed or neutered they may live longer lives, as they will not be exposed to certain illnesses. We recommend pets get the surgery when they are younger, before the heat cycle begins.
What is spaying and neutering?
Spaying and neutering stops your pet’s ability to reproduce. Neutering is performed on male pets and the procedure removes their testicles. Spaying is done on females where the uterus and ovaries are removed. Before both spay or neuter surgeries, we put your pet under general anesthesia. Your pet will be asleep the whole time and feel nothing. Once the surgery is completed, we monitor them until they wake up from the anesthesia. All patients are given pain medication to help with their recovery. Our team will provide instructions on how to care for them and schedule an appointment to follow-up on their healing.
Why should I have my pet spayed or neutered?
Not only does spaying and neutering prevent your pet from reproducing it has other benefits as well. When you spay your pet, you protect them from uterine and ovarian cancer. Neutering protects your male pets from prostate cancer and from developing behavioural problems. Pets that haven’t been spayed/neutered are more likely to be aggressive, fight with other pets and roam or possibly get lost. To minimize veterinary visits we can also spay and neuter your pet while we perform other general procedures.
My pet is older, can I have them spayed or neutered?
Yes! Older pets can be spayed or neutered as long as they are healthy for surgery. Our veterinarians will run tests to determine how much anesthesia is safe for them and to make sure they can properly recover.
