Heartworm disease is a serious and potentially fatal disease in dogs/cats..
It is caused by a blood-borne parasite called Dirofilaria immitis. As many as 30 species of mosquitoes can transmit heartworms. Adult heartworms cause disease by clogging the heart and major blood vessels leading from the heart causing cardiac and other organ disease. A simple blood test can be performed to detect heartworm infection.
